Dai Ko Myo, the master symbol, represents all that is Reiki. Its intention is enlightenment.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese healing technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes physical healing. When we experience stress, pain, illness or worry, our natural healing process often becomes unbalanced. Reiki treats the whole person including body, mind and spirit, to return the body to a balanced state of harmony.

Reiki is a holistic treatment that works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques and is used in many hospitals, medical settings and private practices to help promote recovery. Evidence has shown that patients who received Reiki in the clinical setting often reported a deep sense of calm; reduced anxiety; relief from acute and chronic pain; a decrease in the need for pain medications; improved sleep and appetite; an overall accelerated healing process post surgery or illness; and can reduce side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, including nausea and fatigue. Reiki has no side effects or contraindications.

Reiki helps to restore and balance the energy in the body, allowing us to better heal ourselves. The recipient of Reiki is an active participant during their session by setting an intention to being open to receive whatever they might need most from the session. The Reiki practitioner is trained to facilitate the natural healing processes and does not dictate or manipulate it, but allows them to work at optimal balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a session?

Sessions are generally one hour but can also be 30-90 minutes. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to review your goals and treatment plan prior to treatment.

What to expect?

Reiki is performed on a client whom is fully clothed, lying reclined on a massage table. You will want to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. At your option, Reiki may be done with a light gentle pressure static touch or the Practitioner’s hands may be a few inches/centimeters above your body at the hand positions with no actual touch. There are standard hand placements beginning at your head or feet, avoiding all sensitive body parts. Let your Practitioner know prior to the session which you prefer, light touch or no touch.

Most clients feel a sense of relaxation and peace. The mind may feel calm and your physical body should feel relaxed. At the practitioner’s hand placements, you may feel a very slight tingling, heat, or energy, or nothing at all. The sensations or lack of are not a barometer of the Reiki, they are just how your particular body senses energy. You may feel a peace and calm in your mind or physically in general. It is different for all clients but deep relaxation is almost always felt.

Reiki is so relaxing that sometimes clients may fall asleep during the session. Don’t worry though, you will still receive all of the benefits of the session, sleeping or awake.

Is Reiki for an acute or chronic condition?

If you have an acute condition you should seek out a licensed medical professional immediately. If you have a chronic or current issue, Reiki can be an excellent complement in your health or wellness plan. You will see for yourself how Reiki makes you feel, if it is relaxing, if you feel more clarity after the session. Many people, after trying one session, go on to purchase a series of sessions to progressively work on their current wellness goals.

Is there talking during a treatment?

Like massage, most treatments are performed in quiet with soft, ambient music in the background. If you want to communicate something to your practitioner during the session, such as if you are cold or too warm, if you would like them to adjust the music, if you are feeling a sensation you would like to discuss, if something feels uncomfortable for you, if you have a question or issue, then do speak up at any time during the session. Your practitioner wants the best for you and wants to make your session the best experience possible. Also, your practitioner may ask you after the session if there is anything you would like to share and you may do so at your option. This is good feedback for your practitioner’s notes for planning your next session.

Should I do anything special after my treatment session?

Please drink plenty of water to hydrate your body as your body’s energy system may be moving at a more optimum rate, so please care for yourself with water and healthy food during the day. It is beneficial to spend some quiet time that day or evening after your session to journal or to contemplate as you may have some insights and further mental clarity as your body continues to process the Reiki session.
